Lists help with summer reading selections

As students enjoy the summer break, the Fayette County School System is reminding parents to include reading as part of their out-of-school activities.

While children of all ages should incorporate reading into their summer plans, Reading Coordinator Debbie Wheat recommends that sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students read a minimum of three books during the break to promote understanding and appreciation of reading.

To help parents make reading selections for their students, the school system has complied a list of titles of literary merit that are both enjoyable and worthwhile for summer reading.

These lists have been sent to Fayette's public libraries and Barnes and Noble, Books-A-Million and Omega Bookstores so that they can support the school system's efforts to keep students reading during the summer months. The lists can also be downloaded from the school system's Web site at www.fcboe.org.
