County looks at more weather sirensBy JOHN
THOMPSON
Fayette County could have two more severe-weather warning sirens after this week's meeting of the Fayette County Board of Commissioners. On this week's consent agenda is a proposal by Fire Chief Jack Krakeel to purchase two sirens from McCord Communications for $71,296. If approved, the purchase would bring the county's total to seven sirens. "We're looking at placing these two at recreational areas, such as McCurry Park and Kiwanis Field," said Fire and Emergency Services Department spokesman Capt. Pete Nelms. Nelms said the recreation areas are heavily populated during the spring storm season, and it makes sense to have sirens near the parks to warn residents and visitors. The county started the siren system in 1999, when it received a grant. Since then, Nelms said the County Commission has been good to the department and funded thea dditional sirens. Other items on Wednesday's meeting include: A request from Director of Human Resources Connie Boehnke to rescind implementation of the Flexible Spending Account for Dependent Care for employees. An update from Boehnke to on the renewal process for the county's workers' compensation insurance. Approval of a recommendation from the Water Committee for construction of a building for storage at the south Fayette water treatment plant for tractors, lawn mowers, lawn care supplies, gas and paints. Approval of recommendation by Purchasing Tim Jones to award bid to low bidder SCS Field Services in the amount of $284,100.50 for gas collection expansion and well replacement. The meeting starts at 3:30 p.m. at the Fayette County Administrative Complex.
