Smoke detector helped save lives of Fayetteville couple during fireBy JOHN
MUNFORD
A Fayetteville couple was fortunate to escape their home early Tuesday morning after a porch at the rear of the residence caught fire. John and Carolyne Morris were awakened by smoke detectors so they could leave the home and call 911 for assistance, according to Larry Nash, who owns the home on South Jeff Davis that his granddaughter and her husband lived in. "We lost a lot of things but we didn't lose anybody," said Nash, who built the home when he and his wife moved to Fayette County back in 1961. Fayetteville Fire Chief Alan Jones said the fire spread from the porch into the kitchen and living area of the home, causing heavy fire damage on the inside. Although the fire had engulfed the porch when firefighters arrived at 12:44 a.m., they did a good job of "knocking down" the flames, Jones said. No one including the firefighters who responded to the scene was hurt during the fire, Jones noted. "There was an awful lot of heat and smoke," Jones said. Firefighters on the scene initially entered the home to battle the flames, he said. The fire entered the home through doors and windows of the residence from the porch area, a wooden structure that had been added on after the house was originally built, Jones said. The brick exterior of the home helped stop the flames, but the fire extended into the attic area before it was extinguished, Jones noted. "I was pretty amazed they were able to stop it where they did," Jones said. "A tremendous amount of fire extended into the house on two different sides of the house." The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but there is no evidence of any foul play, Jones said Tuesday morning. "There is nothing to indicate anything suspicious," Jones said. Fayetteville fire crews were assisted by the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Jones added.
