Lake Peachtee dredging nears end; Drake Field to be restored By JOHN
MUNFORD
Crews are wrapping up the actual dredging of Lake Peachtree, with just a small area left which could be completed today, according to officials. It will still take a little while to let the remaining silt dry in the temporary drainage ponds on Drake Field, county consulting engineer David Jaeger told the Fayette County Water Committee at its meeting Wednesday morning. After the silt dries, it is trucked off-site for final disposal. The contractor will have to restore Drake Field to its original condition, which will also take some time, Jaeger added. The silt has been drying quicker than the contractor expected, Jaeger said, adding that there have been few complaints, especially considering how large the project is. "It has gone extremely well," Jaeger said. Water system director Tony Parrott said the situation with the temporary road providing access to Drake Field from Ga. Highway 54 has worked well. There have been no complaints from Peachtree City or the Georgia Department of Transportation about the gravel road, Parrott said. The county chose a contractor for the project that has used a floating barge system to excavate the silt from the bottom of the lake, which serves as a drinking water reservoir. The lake is owned by Peachtree City, but the county has agreed to dredge the lake periodically because the city allows it to be used as a reservoir.
