Coweta County is in good shape.

That was the assessment that Coweta County Chairman Leigh Schlumper brought to the Newnan Rotary Club last week.

"She did a really good job," said Coweta County Public Information Officer Tom Corker.

Corker said Schlumper covered several points, including:

The success of the new fairgrounds complex on Pine Road. The complex has already staged several major events and has a new nature center that was dedicated in 2002.

The cooperation between local governments. All of the county's elected leaders held an intergovernmentals summit in the spring in Athens and formed the Coweta Intergovernmental Agency.

The low millage rate. The county has not raised the millage rate for the last 10 years, but increased services. Schlumper did ask the public to support a tax increase in the future, if it's needed to provide necessary services.

Increasing services. The county has purchased land at Ga. Highway 54 and Ebenezer Road. The county plans to build a new library and health center on the site.

The beautification of Ga. Highway 34. Schlumper has pushed hard for a new sign ordinance and development standards on the busy eastern Coweta highway. She also got an ordinance passed that will keep the grass trimmed and the trash picked up on the state highway.

The push for more water resources. The county is currently busying water from Atlanta and is pushing forward for plans for a new reservoir. When its completed in 2005, the B.T. Brown reservoir in northern Coweta County will produce up to six million gallons of water a day.
