Nelms among first to complete public safety training for executives

Fayette County Emergency Management Coordinator Pete Nelms recently completed a 16-month program at Mercer University for public safety executives.

Nelms was one of the first graduates of the Public Safety Leadership Institute offered by the school. The program was designed to equip the students to better serve their communities in times of crisis.

The program was designed for all branches of public safety from police chiefs to parole officers, firefighters and paramedics.

Students in the program received special homeland security training and also covered topics such as budgeting, technology, management techniques and ethics.

"The goal of the program is to equip public safety executives with the knowledge and skills they need, with a strong emphasis on ethics and professionalism, to literally become the most knowledgeable public safety leaders," said program coordinator Anthony Korey.

The program has been endorsed by the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, the Georgia Sheriff's Association Inc. and the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council.
