Marcelle B. Gordon


Marcelle B. Gordon, 78, Atlanta, died May 5, 2003. She was born in Zurich, Switzerland. She was retired from the Georgia State University purchasing department. She was preceded in death by her oldest brother, Robert Bein. Memorial services were at the East Point Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Roosevelt Winfrey officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Yvette and David Elliott, Fayetteville; granddaughters, Marcy Elliott, and Michelle Elliott; brothers, Paul and Lydia Bein, and Rene and Yvonne Bein; a sister, Marty Frey. Virginia Elizabeth McCall Blackston


Virginia Elizabeth McCall Blackston, 93, Fayetteville, died May 5, 2003. She was born Feb. 9, 1910 in Cobb County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband Glenvor H. Blackston Sr., a son, Robert Murray Blackston, and a sister, Robbie Blandford Weems. She was a longtime member of Dogwood Hills Baptist Church, East Point, and a member of the Hannah Sunday School class. After moving to Fayetteville in her later years, she joined the North Fayette United Methodist Church. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell & Son chapel with the Rev. Franklin “Zip” Long and the Rev. Robert A. Kerr officiating. Interment was Westview Cemetery, Atlanta. Survivors include a son, Glenn and Shirley Blackston, Fayetteville; daughters, Marie B. and Maury McDonnell, Cartersville, Ga., and Donna B. Krilla, Jonesboro; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Charles and Georgia Blackston, Augusta, Ga.; and cousins, Mary Lucy Hattrich Dean, Sun City, Fla., and Fred Hattrich, Columbus, S. Agnes Louise Knight


Agnes Louise Knight, 79, Tyrone, died May 6, 2003. She was born Sept. 20, 1924 in Gwinnett County, Ga. She worked from the Georgia State Department of Agriculture for 41 years and was the first female Director of Personnel for that department. Services were at the Fayetteville First Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Stringham officiating. Interment was at Holly Hill Memorial Park, Fairburn. Survivors include her husband, Roy Alton Knight, Tyrone; a daughter, Judy and Terry Murphy, Union City; a grandson, Michael and Tami Murphy Jr.; a granddaughter, Ashley Baswell; grandchildren, Christopher Baswell, Hailey Baswell, and Trevor Murphy; and six sisters-in-law. Charles Max Butler


Charles Max Butler, 79, Fayetteville, died May 7, 2003. He was born Sept. 8, 1923. Graveside services were at the College Park Cemetery. Ginger Gober Wright


Ginger Gober Wright, 66, Peachtree City, died May 4, 2003. She was born Nov. 17, 1936 in Rockmart, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard F. Wright, Jan. 18. 1991 and a brother, Jon Gober, Oct. 12, 1989. She was a resident of College Park for over 30 years before moving to Peachtree City. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. Services were at the Alvis Miller & Son chapel with Minister Alvis Miller officiating. Interment was at the Aragon Cemetery. Survivors include a son, Vincent Wright, Griffin; daughters, Sydney Wright Brown, Peachtree City, and Laura Wright West, East Point; parents, Ira W. and Clara Martin Gober, Rockmart; brothers, Lanny Gober, Rockmart, and Tim Gober, Carrollton; sisters, Shirley King, Rockmart, and Jan Julian, Marietta; and grandchildren, Robby Brown, Clarisse Brown, and Kristian West. Joan Cole


Joan Cole, 76, Young Harris, Ga., died May 9, 2003. She was born May 2, 1927 in DeKalb County. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Mason Carter. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Glenn Stringham officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park Cemetery, Fayetteville. Survivors include a son, Ross and Nancy Cole, Fayetteville; daughters, Connie Burdett, Hiram, and Robin and John Funk, Moreland; and a brother, James Lemon, Fayetteville. Carl J. John Peter Ashmore


John Peter Ashmore, 13, Senoia, Fayette County, died May 9, 2003. He was born Oct. 11, 1989 in Atlanta. Services were at St. Gabriel Catholic Church with interment at Brooks Memorial Cemetery, Brooks, Ga. Survivors include his mother, Linda G. Ashmore, Senoia; father, Jack Ashmore, Dadeville, Ala.; a brother, Matthew Ashmore, Senoia; and grandmother, Dorothy Galgano, New York, N. Y. Carl J. Kara Nicole Koon


Kara Nicole Koon, 21, Fayetteville, died May 10, 2003. She was born March 22, 1982 in Clayton County, Ga. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Bill Priester officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, College Park. Survivors include her parents, Mike and Kay Koon, Fayetteville; a brother, Roderick Bentley, Atlanta; sisters, Katie Koon, Fayetteville, and Jennifer and Eric Rivas, Lithonia; nephews, Aidan Rivas, and Eason Rivas, both of Lithonia; and a grandmother, Shirley Black, Daytona Beach, Fla. Michael W. Portwood Sr.


Michael W. Portwood Sr., 45, Fayetteville, died May 10, 2003. He was born June 2, 1957 in Newnan. He graduated from Newnan High School in 1975 where he was a drum major. He attended the University of Georgia from 1975 to 1980 and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and a Big Brother of Delta Gamma Sorority. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and a past board member of Pine Valley Girl Scout Council, and First Union/Wachovia employed him as a stockbroker. He had been baptized at Unity Baptist Church, Newnan, and attended New Hope Baptist Church, Fayetteville. He loved art, music, cars, cooking and people. Services were at New Hope Baptist Church South, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Tim Woodruff, and the Rev. Hugh Kirby officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Lisa Bertz Portwood, Fayetteville; a son, Michael Portwood Jr., Fayetteville; a daughter, Caroline Portwood, Fayetteville; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Obie Portwood, Montgomery, Ala; a brother, Mitch and Frances Portwood, Roswell; a sister, Marcia and David Stuart, Acworth; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bertz, Savannah; and brothers-in-law, Robert Bertz Jr., Savannah, and Brett and Suzanne Bertz, Cumming; 11 nephews and nieces. Alan Gerald Salisbury


Alan Gerald Salisbury, 82, Peachtree City, died May 10, 2003. He was born Sept. 23, 1920 in Oakland, Calif. Survivors include his wife, Vivian Salisbury, Peachtree City; a son, Stewart Salisbury, Peachtree City; a daughter, Cythina Fradin, Lawrenceville; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Carl J. Doris Ramsey


Doris Ramsey, 90, Peachtree City, formerly of Brooklyn N. Y., died May 11, 2003. She was born Sept. 17, 1912 in Kings County, N. Y. Memorial services were at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home, Peachtree City, with the Rev. Richard D. Brigham officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Rona M. and John C. Fong, Peachtree City; a grandson, Roy Ramsey; and a sister, Irma Robinson, New Paltz, N. Y. Metro Crematory, Peachtree City, was in charge.

Mae Lizzie Couch


Mae Lizzie Couch, 73, Peachtree City, died May 12, 2003. She was born Sept. 18, 1929 in Fayette County. She was preceded in death by her father, Bogan Mask, and husband, Fred Couch. Services were at the Higgins Hillcrest Chapel with the Rev. Ron Whitlock, and Andy Byers officiating. Interment was at Senoia City Cemetery. Survivors include daughters, Barbara Couch, and Debbie and Billy Quick, all of Peachtree City, and Carol Donnie Padgett, Fayetteville; a brother, Roy Mask, Fayetteville; a sister, Iona Jackson, Fairburn; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. James Robert Carlson


James Robert Carlson, 60, Peachtree City, died May 12, 2003. He was born Dec. 15, 1942 in Rusk County, Wis. Services were at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Peachtree City, with the Rev. Father David McGuinness officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include his wife, Mary Mangold Carlson, Peachtree City; daughters, Kelly Carlson, Peachtree City, and Colleen and Gary Gray, Cartersville; a granddaughter, Allyson Gray; and sisters, Doris Carlson, Ladysmith, Wis., Lois Anderson, Woodbury, Minn. and Mary Parker, Bartlett, Ill. Timothy Birt Matthews, 58, Fayetteville, died May 12, 2003. He was born April 5, 1945 in Villa Rica, Carroll County, Ga. Memorial services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel, Peachtree City.
