Students get history lesson from MacArthur's secretaryNot many people can say that they knew Gen. Douglas MacArthur personally, but students at Sandy Creek High School got a rare insight into what the general was really like from someone who knew him best. Linnie Widney, an army secretary to MacArthur during World War II, spoke to Caterina Tang's American history and advanced placement American history classes about his assignment to the general in the Philippines and Tokyo at the end of the war. Widney shared stories and insights of his experiences at the war command headquarters and with the Japanese people. Justin Galimore, Widney's grandson, introduced him and showed scrapbooks and mementos to the students which included autographed pictures and handwritten letters from the general as well as Widney's orders and photos taken of the post-war rubble. The students were especially fascinated by the pictures of vintage tanks and planes.
