Association honors DeCotis, names top counselors

For all of the work that Superintendent John DeCotis has done to help the Fayette County school System's counseling program through the years, the Fayette School Counselors Association named him Advocate of the Year at their third annual awards reception.

Each year the association selects a person who is not a counselor to receive the advocate award. The person must be someone who has worked diligently to help improve and support the counseling program and its activities. Past recipients of the award include school system social worker Karen Spangler (2001) and former Pupil Services Coordinator Larry Reeves (2002), who retired last year.

In addition to the advocate of the year, the counselors submitted nominations for both Elementary and High School Counselor of the Year awards. This year's elementary honor went to Faith Smith of Hood Avenue Primary, who is retiring from the school system at the end of the academic year. Sherry LaMarr of McIntosh High was the recipient of the high school award.

The organization also installed its new officers for the year. The officers are JoAnn Swafford, president, Fayette Middle; Sonya Tucker, president elect, McIntosh High; Billie Anderson, past president, Braelinn Elementary; Phyllis Bennett, elementary worksetting vice president, Cleveland Elementary; Janice McLeroy, middle school worksetting vice president, Rising Starr Middle; Sherry LeMarr, high school worksetting vice president, McIntosh High; Joy Conklin, secretary, Peeples Elementary; and Amor Kok, treasurer, exceptional children.
