Record 1,467 to graduate Friday Nearly $20 million in scholarships awarded to Fayette seniors
By J. FRANK LYNCH
When more than 1,450 seniors walk the aisles to accept their diplomas at Fayette's four public high schools on Friday, they'll represent one of the largest, smartest and, if scholarship offers are an indication, fortunate classes in the county's history. Fayette County High again boasts the largest class in the county, with 481 seniors. Among them are two appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy and one to the U.S. Air Force Academy, as well as one 4-year scholarship recipient to Morehouse College. More than $4.2 million in scholarships is being offered to Fayette High graduates. Starr's Mill has 401 seniors set to graduate, including two Air Force Academy appointments and one Naval Academy signee. A whopping $6.3 million in scholarships is going to Panther seniors. At McIntosh High, 322 seniors will walk the aisle, earning several million in scholarships, a school guidance counselor said. Exact dollar amounts were unavailable at presstime, but the total was expected to be comparable to the other three schools. Sandy Creek's 263 seniors include one Air Force Academy appointment, one West Point Academy cadet, and four ROTC scholarship winners, notable since this was the school's first year with the ROTC program. Another student has received a scholarship to Howard University in Washington, D.C. In total, around $4 million in scholarships will go to Sandy Creek seniors. All four high schools will host ceremonies in their respective stadiums. Sandy Creek and Starr's Mill seniors graduate at 6 p.m., while Fayette and McIntosh ceremonies begin at 8 p.m. In the event of rain, a real possibility with recent storms, graduation services will move to 10 a.m. on Saturday, again in each school's stadium except for Sandy Creek, which would move to New Hope Baptist Church North.
