Math students work problems to raise money for hospital

Students at J.C. Booth Middle are using math to help other children who are battling various catastrophic diseases.

For the seventh year in a row, the school participated in the Math-a-thon fundraiser to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Students worked approximately 200 math problems each and collected pledges for each problem they completed. The money raised by the students this year was over $8,000, toping last year's total by almost $3,000.

"Our theme this time was 'hero' because students at Booth are heroes for getting sponsors and working over 200 math problems each to raise money for other children," said math teacher Brenda Cannington.

The school's top individual fundraiser was Clint Kimsey, who raised over $840.

St. Jude's will use the proceeds to care for patients, conduct medical research and house parents so that they can stay close to their children while they are patients at the hospital.
