County looking at lot sizes

By JOHN THOMPSON

Is Coweta County on the verge of changing lots sizes in the unincorporated county?

Not if Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter has anything to do with it.

During last week's County commission meeting, the commission decided to reexamine the county's lot size structure.

In 1997, the county went through several public hearings before finally determining that 1.6 acres should be the minimum size for building in the unincorporated county.

"I'd be all for increasing the lot sizes, but I don't think that's what we're looking at," Hunter said after the meeting.

The east Coweta Commissioner said smaller lots belong in the city where public water and sewer is available, but not in the county.

Hunter remembers the flak the county endured during the 1997 hearings and is not fond of going down that road again.

"Y'all really don't know what you could be doing," he said.

He said the pressure is coming from developers who want to build more houses on smaller lots, which he's dead-set against.

If Hunter can convince two of the other commissioners, he could have this item moved to the backburner.

"I've been pretty successful. We'll see what happens."
