Ten things to ask your builder

Gary Marshall, broker at Assist 2 Sell Buyer & Realty Center says there are 10 things to ask builders when buying a new home and provides the following information from the Certified Professional Homebuilders Association.

1. Do they have at least 3 years of home building experience?

2. Is home building their main source of income?

3. Do they build according to a set of building performance standards such as, the Homeowner Handbook?

4. Do they offer an approved Limited Warranty on their home?

5. Do they have a dispute resolution process that includes offering Mandatory Binding Arbitration?

6. Do they maintain appropriate insurances including builders' risk, general liability and required insurances such as, workers' compensation?

7. Do they provide references from homeowners, trade contractors, material suppliers and a financial institution?

8. Are they a member of their local Home Builders Association and do they abide by a Code of Ethics?

9. Do they attend regular continuing education classes to keep up with the latest building requirements and industry standards?

10. Are they a Certified Professional Home Builder?
