Wednesday, May 14, 2003 Realtors treated to V.I.P. tour of Fayette schools Although storm damage kept many realtors away from the Fayette County School System's first Realtor tour of schools last Thursday, Public Information Specialist Melinda Berry-Dreisbach has deemed the event a success. "Although the turnout was fewer than what we had expected, those who took the tour commented that they now have a better understanding of the school system and its schools and have asked that we make this an annual event," she said. Robert J. Burch Elementary, Flat Rock Middle and Sandy Creek High were the featured schools on the tour. These schools were selected due to the construction of new neighborhoods in their attendance area, including the new Southhampton subdivision being developed by John Wieland. After a welcome reception at the Fayette County Board of Education, the Realtors got into the spirit of the tour by boarding a school bus to head out to the three schools. When the Realtors arrived, a welcoming committee made up of parents, students, business partners and school staff and administrators greeted the group and gave them a personal tour of each facility while highlighting programs and activities that were unique to the schools. The goal of the event was to give Realtors an opportunity to personally visit some of Fayette's schools, see teachers in action and interact with administrators in order to gain first-hand knowledge about the school system that they can pass along to their clients. "Before today when people asked me about these schools I couldn't say anything because I really didn't know that much about them," said Stephen Walker of Prudential. "Now I can feel comfortable talking about them because I have personally visited the schools and talked to teachers and administrators." In addition to learning more about the featured schools, the Realtors received general information on boundaries, opening of new schools and the balanced calendar that will be implemented this fall. "I think an annual tour of this type would be a great idea with different schools featured each time," said Merry Holley of ReMax Results Around Atlanta. "I learned so much valuable information that I otherwise would not have if I hadn't participated. What I have learned will definitely help me better serve my clients." Berry-Dreisbach said the school system will look at organizing another tour next year.
