County hosts elementary math tournament

Elementary students across the county showed off their proficiency at math during the third annual Fayette County Math Tournament held at the LaFayette Educational Center April 28-29.

Teams of three students plus one alternate from each of the county's 15 elementary schools competed in the two-day event for fourth- and fifth-graders. Teams were given 15 challenging questions with only one minute to solve them.

Students performed so well at the competition that tiebreakers had to be used both days to determine the winning teams. The fifth-grade tournament required 11 tiebreakers, setting a record for the most needed to finish a competition.

The 2003 winners for the fourth-grade level were Cleveland (first place), Philipee Delage, Drew Huefler, Mitchel Watson and Trevor Toth (alternate); East Fayette (second place), Shoya Ihara, Eric Jaszarowski, Connor White and Kate Jablonski (alternate); Braelinn (third place), Brett Pearce, David Pierce, Sanjay Sridaran and Brett Baker (alternate).

Fifth-grade winning teams were Braelinn (first place), Jessi Lambing, Becca Fawley, John Merlie and John Trinquero (alternate); Cleveland (second place), Anthony Agnone, Mathew Loeffler, Patrick Loeffler and Cindy Ruiz (alternate); Robert J. Burch (third place), Matt Goss, Alysha Kaba, Rebecca Owens and Tyler Green (alternate).

"All of the students who participated are already winners representing their schools and they should be very proud of their accomplishment," said Kay Seabolt, math coordinator and organizer of the event.

Each winning team received a trophy for their school and every contestant was given a certificate of participation. Additionally, all three winning teams from each grade level will have their names engraved on the plaque of champions that is on display in the math coordinator's office at the LaFayette Educational Center.

This year's event was sponsored by Jerre Parsons from Great Source Education Group who provided the school trophies, "I Love Math" buttons for the winners and Math Resource books for each team.
