'Retold' stories in Newnan this weekend

Newnan Community Theatre's second performance of the Popcorn Series opens this Saturday.

"Fairy Tales Retold" will run Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 p.m., May 10-18. This show has taken a few fairy tales and mixed them together with modern-day humor and a crazy cast.

Jennifer Dorrell has undertaken direction for this zany production. "We hope the audience laughs as much as we have," said Dorrell, wife of Artistic Director Dave Dorrell. She is usually seen directing children at the theatre. Recently she directed the well-known and well-attended "Alice in Wonderland" and was last seen onstage in "Vanities."

"Fairy Tales Retold" consists of a cast of adults including Dorrell herself as Little Red Riding Hood; Joel Bray as the Giant; Jeff Allen as the Three Billy Goats Gruff, the Three Little Pigs and the Three Bubbas; Bert Lyons as the Prince, Sharon Mansfield as Goldylocks and Snow White; Laurel Alford as Cinderella; Phil Alford as the Woodcutter; Susan Patterson as Sleeping Beauty; Lynn Sovik as Repunzel and Matthew Bailey, Jr. as the Big Bad Wolf and a big surprise. This cast features a lot of familiar faces as Bray, Allen, Mansfield and Bailey were recently onstage in the wildly popular production of "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Patterson joined Dorrell in "Vanities" as did the adapter of the script, Becky Clark. Phil Alford was last seen on our stage as Annie at the Annual Gala in January. His wife, Laurel, is usually seen with the Extras! Teen Group or on a ladder. Lyons is back with the theater for the first time since his appearance in "Arsenic and Old Lace" and Sovik, who has an extensive theater background, is back in the groove. She was re-bitten by the acting bug when her daughters recently participated in "Alice in Wonderland."

Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $6 for students and seniors. Phone 770-683-6282 for group rates and/or reservations, visit www.newnantheatre.com or e-mail to nctc@numail.org for more information.
