Chambliss praises Johnson

U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., recently praised the efforts of Newnan teacher Lorraine Johnson, one of four finalists named by the White House to be recognized as the National Teacher of the Year.

"Lorraine Johnson is an American hero," said Chambliss, who attended an event at the White House recognizing Johnson.

"Top-notch teachers, like Lorraine Johnson, work day and night to make a difference to our nation1s young people preparing for their future. As the husband of a retired teacher who spent 35 years in the classroom, I know first hand the deep commitment, tough challenges, and endless efforts that go along with being a dedicated teacher. There is no doubt about it: Lorraine Johnson is a dedicated educator."

Johnson, who teaches seventh-grade language arts at Arnall Middle School in Newnan, was one of four educators in the country that were recognized by President George Bush. Johnson was also named Georgia's Teacher of theYear for 2003.

"It was a real honor and a privilege to share this special day with Lorraine," said Chambliss. "Her hard work and dedication are an inspiration to all of us."

In addition Chambliss, President Bush, U.S. Secretary of Education Rodney Paige and many lawmakers attended the event honoring Johnson.

The National Teacher of the Year Program began in 1952 and continues as the oldest national honors program that focuses public attention on excellence in teaching. The National Teacher of the Year is chosen from among the State Teachers of the Year by a national selection committee representing the major national education organizations. Each year, the National Teacher of the Year is introduced to the American people by the President of the United States.
