New rules proposed for sports tourneys at parks

If you want to run a soccer tournament at one of Coweta County's fields, you'll soon see a new set of regulations governing the county's facilities.

Coweta County Commission chairman Leigh Schlumper said she was the county's Whitlock Park two Saturday's ago and was approached by a person who was helping stage a tournament at the site.

The person was collecting entry fees for the tournament, but then Schlumper discovered the tournament organizers were charging for parking at the county facility.

"I identified myself and told them to get out of the parking lots. When I went back in a couple of hours, they were back in the parking lot," she said.

Schlumper was so angry she thought about banning the county's softball association from using the fields, since they had allowed the tournament organizers to use the facility.

But after she calmed down, she said, she decided there had to be a better way to approach the problem.

County recreation director Carl McKnight said he had been in touch with the tournament organizers in Marietta and was trying to get further details on how much the tournament charged people to park.

"We have got to have some rules governing these tournaments," said Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter.

Schlumper suggested possibly collecting the tournament entry fees before the tournament started. The county receives 25 percent of any of the profits staged at county facilities, she said.

McKnight said he would work together with the softball and soccer associations in the county to create rules and regulations governing any further tournaments on county property.
