Storm rocks Coweta

A powerful storm system rumbled through the south metro area Wednesday night and left in its wake tumbled trees, downed power lines and children with a day off from school.

Most of the damage occurred in the eastern Coweta County area, according to Coweta County Public Information officer Tom Corker.

"Lower Fayetteville Road, Lora Smith Road and Sharpsburg were really pounded," Corker said.

By Thursday morning, all of the county's public works crews were busy trying to remove trees from roadways to clear the county's busy transportation corridors.

Only two roads were closed to traffic early Thursday. Public Works officials said Herry Road, off Ga. Highway 34 West was closed due to failure of the road. Bell Springs Road, a dirt road running between Standing Rock Road and Gary Summers Road was closed due to water damage as well. Crews were working on both of the roads Thursday in order to reopen the roads as quickly as possible.

Corker reminds residents that Coweta County work crews can only clean up debris from county road rights-of-way.

"Homeowners are responsible for clean up of any damage/debris on their property," he added.

Corker also said the county will accept storm debris free of charge at the C&D landfill/transfer station site on Essie Mae Walker Road for the next two weeks.

Coweta County schools were also closed Thursday after the storm caused power outages at East Coweta High School, Willis Road Elementary, Poplar Road Elementary and Newnan Crossing Elementary.

School system public information officer Dean Jackson said none of the system's schools suffered any damage, except for debris in the parking lot.

As of 10:30 a.m. yesterday, some roads were still being cleared. Power had been restored late in the morning to East Coweta High School, Newnan Crossing Elementary School and Poplar Road Elementary School, but was still off at Willis Road Elementary School.
