Drivers demonstrate skill at Road-eo

School bus drivers demonstrated their driving skills as they maneuvered through the obstacle course of Fayette's School Bus Road-eo April 24 at the Kiwanis Park on Redwine Road.

Each year the county's drivers participate in the event with the two top finishers advancing to the district level competition. The 2003 winners were Diane Vaughn (#292), first place; Divan Power (#199), second and Barbara Dye (#26L), third.

Both Vaughn and Power will advance to the district 5 competition May 17 in Rome. The first- and second-place finishers of that competition will compete at the state level later this year.

During the competition, drivers are scored on their abilities to successfully perform various maneuvers. One event requires competitors to drive the bus' rear double wheels between a 25-foot-long row of tennis balls without touching them.

Fayette's skilled drivers make driving through the obstacles look easier than what it really is, as Assistant Superintendent Fred Oliver and several deputies from the Fayette County Sheriff's Department found out when they took a bus through the course.

"I feel that every driver that came out today and participated is a winner," said Transportation Coordinator Pam Holt. "Participating in this event helps the drivers improve their driving skills, thus making them more proficient at their job. Making each participant a better school bus driver is what the School Bus Road-eo is all about."

The skills course consisted of the following events: curb line, stop line, alley dock, right turn, diminishing clearance, straight line, railroad crossing, parallel parking, serpentine and offset alley.
