Local Students earn honors at Math Day

Several Fayette County math students competed and earned placements at the 31st annual State University of West Georgia Math Day recently hosted by the Department of Mathematics.

Students from various high schools across the state participated in the event to learn about the career options available in mathematics and to compete in the areas of geometry, algebra II, advanced math and calculus.

Winners received trophies and Math Day T-shirts for excelling in three competitions: testing, problem-solving and ciphering.

Both David Sandretto and Amanda Thomas of Sandy Creek High took second and third place, respectively, in the calculus competition and Sung Park of Fayette County High earned first place honors in algebra II.

Fayette students had a clean sweep in the advanced math competition with David Tiffany and Soung Gi, both of Fayette County High, taking first and second place, respectively, and Adele Handy of McIntosh High placing third.
