Health Occupations students bring home the gold

For the first time ever, health occupations students at Starr's Mill High School competed in a tournament hosted by the Health Occupations Students of America and swept first place wins in their events.

Four students participated at the state level of the HOSA competition, each bringing home a gold medal even though they had no prior experience with the contest.

Vikash Amin and Greg Berger competed in the Emergency Medical Technician division as a team. This event included a written test as well as a clinical exam. Lauren Knight and Jennifer Messer worked as a team in the Health Career Display category. They gave a five-minute presentation with a period of questions and answers. Written tests in both categories had as many as 100 questions.

The tournament was competitive with approximately 400 students participating in 35 categories. Now the winning Starr's Mill students will go on to compete at the national level next month in Atlanta along with 5,000 other winners from throughout the nation.

HOSA is a student organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in health care and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.
