United Way lunch set for Friday

The Fayette United Way's annual Volunteer Lunch is scheduled for Friday, May 9, at 11:30 a.m. at the Fayette County Library. Awards will be given to the volunteer of the year and the youth volunteer of the year.

In addition, there will be the Pacesetter Award. Pacesetters are companies that agree to hold their United Way rallies before the actual kick-off of the campaign, and set a goal of a 10-percent increase over the past year. The companies that will be honored at this luncheon are Cooper Lighting, Heritage Bank, Fayette Community Hospital, Fayette Senior Services, Florida Rock Industries, and Schachle Benefit Services, Inc.

The youth nominees are:

Jessica Padgett, who worked with Fayetteville First United Methodist Church in forming its orchestra.

Maribeth Nolan, nominated by a counselor at Starr's Mill High School for her work with exceptional children.

The adult nominees are:

Connie Haynes, nominated for her work as a wildlife rehabilitator.

Dianne Hood, for her work in helping establish the Sara Harp Minter School.

Carolyn Phillips, for volunteering with the Fayette Diabetes Association.

Tina Scarbrough, for her work at East Fayette Elementary School.

Joan Sords, nominated for her efforts as a literacy tutor with Community Literacy Action.

Amy Steffan, nominated for her work with East Fayette Elementary School.

Meloni Thompson, for organizing volunteers and events for Minter Elementary School.

Creighton Warren, for his service to those at Fayette Senior Services.

Stephen Weeman, who was instrumental in starting Fayetteville Youth Soccer League and continues to devote many hours to it.

Richard Williams, who helps provide mentors and scholarships to underserved black males at school systems in two counties.

The Fayette United Way Advisory Board will also be recognized for its work throughout the year.
