For some, getting published in a magazine is a long journey. For seven-year-old Max Sultan of Fayetteville, his first experience with the publishing world came on his first try.

Sultan's picture, "Eagle," was recently published in the May edition of Highlights for Children magazine on the "Our Own Pages" page. Sultan drew the picture last year as a student in Mrs. Ortega's first-grade class at Hood Avenue Primary School.

Ortega sent the picture in and Sultan and his family were recently informed of the picture's publication. Sultan is a fan of the "Hidden Pictures" section of the magazine.

Highlights magazine was founded in 1946 and currently is delivered to 2.5 million children. The magazine receives over 35,000 submissions from their readers each year but can only publish a small percentage of them. Sultan's picture was among that number this year.

Sultan admits to liking to draw but has many other interests. He plays for the Fayetteville Earthquakes in a local soccer league and also enjoys hockey, baseball and, like many of his peers, Yu-Gi-Oh. Sultan is now a student at East Fayette Elementary School and is looking forward to entering the third grade in the fall. He is the son of Craig and Rebecca Sultan and is the older brother of Jack.
