Boy pinned under car briefly at Fayette Pavilion Monday
A 14-year-old boy was pinned under a car for several moments early Monday evening after it slipped out of park near the Rhodes furniture store at the Fayette Pavilion, police said. The youth's injuries are not believed to be life threatening, said Lt. Beverly Trainor of the Fayetteville Police Department. The boy was reaching across the driver's seat to hand his mother something when the car slipped out of gear, dragging the mother along, Trainor said. As the car began to back up, the boy pushed his mother away and tried to press the brake to stop the vehicle, but instead he hit the accelerator, she added. After that, the car began to spin and the boy landed under the vehicle, which came to rest on his abdomen, Trainor said. A witness was able to drive the vehicle off the boy, Trainor added. The victim was transported to Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale but the ambulance was diverted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, said Capt. Pete Nelms of the Fayette County Department of Fire and Emergency Services. No information about the child could be released because of the new federal medical privacy laws, Nelms said. John Munford
