A masked gunman robbed the Kroger grocery store at the Banks Crossing shopping center late Sunday night, according to Fayetteville police.

Although police were able to determine the license plate number of the getaway vehicle driven by a second suspect, that car was ditched behind the former Kmart building, said Lt. Beverly Trainor. Tracking dogs were used to follow the suspects' trail, but it lasted for just a few feet, leading police to believe a second getaway car was used in the heist, Trainor said.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time to contact them with any information that might help solve the case, Trainor said. Since the Taco Bell is open late, someone there might have noticed something, or someone might have left the Kroger just before the incident occurred and noticed something that could help detectives, Trainor said.

"We're asking if they have anything they can provide to us because we don't have very much to go on," Trainor said.

The gunman wore a navy blue ski mask, blue jeans and a green hooded sweatshirt while the driver of the getaway car was described as light skinned with short thick hair and clean shaven, Trainor said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Det. Bob Bautista at 770-461-4441.

The pair got away in a white pearl four-door car that was later found behind the Kmart. Detectives were checking the car for evidence, and it was reported stolen out of Clayton County, Trainor added.

No one was hurt during the robbery, but the gunman pointed the chrome pistol at one of the store employees before taking the money, Trainor added. Police estimated there were as many as 20 people in the store at the time of the robbery.
