Foster parenting info available at childrens safety fair Saturday

Fayette County is in serious need of foster and adoptive families.

Currently there are 62 Fayette children in foster care, but there are only 14 foster families who live here. That means some foster children are placed in homes outside Fayette County, which is less than ideal, said Sharon Herbert of the Department of Family and Children Services.

"We want to keep local children here because they're already enrolled in school and they are familiar with the community," Herbert said. "It also makes reunification of the family easier."

The department will have representatives available at the Peachtree City Wal-Mart Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. to meet with persons interested in learning more about becoming a foster or adoptive family. The representatives will be on hand at the Children's Safety Fair which is sponsored by Fayette County Safe Kids.

A celebrity bus tour will arrive at 1:30 p.m. to help promote foster parenting. Local community leaders and former wrestler Paul"Mr. Wonderful" Orndorff will be on the bus.

DFCS officials plan to hold a foster parent training session in the coming weeks. For more information, call the department at 770-460-2555.
