The members of Flat Rock American Methodist Episcopal Church are celebrating the 26th year of its usher program.

The president of the Usher Board is Ruby Baitey, who has overseen the program from the beginning. Adult ushers serving with her are Evelyn Arnold, Sarah Stokes, Irma Holt, Lucy Balogun, David Stokes and Iva Smith.

In preparation for taking their turn as adults are junior ushers Byron Baitey, Eboni Baitey, Raven Hillery, and Cory Parker.

Dinner on the grounds preceded the afternoon worship service. The Rev. Dwight Elder of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Peachtree City was the guest speaker. He pointed out that when God comes into your life, it changes.

"God honors faithfulness," he said, "and He honors the gatekeepers of the church. The ushers, the gatekeepers of the church, are the first impression newcomers have of the congregation. They must not only be faithful to themselves and their families, but faithful to their attention to the church.

"Do not," he told them, "leave your work at church undone. None of us want to be suddenly judged by God and have him find our work undone."

Eastern Star representatives from Atlanta came to share in honoring the ushers. Mrs. Nora L. Smith, Queen of Sheba, #30, Order of Eastern Stars, presented Ruby Baitey with a sculptured angel for her devotion to the church and its usher program.

The Rev. Wallace Jones serves as the senior pastor. The church is located at 148 Old Chapel Road, just beyond the United States Postal Service building on Ga. Highway 54. It can be reached at 770-461-0283.
