African-American Alliance opens museum
The African-American Alliance has opened an African-American Heritage Museum and Research Center in Newnan. In 2000, a shotgun style house was moved from East Broad Street to Farmer Street. The land on Farmer Street is believed to have been an old "slave cemetery." Originally, the house was to serve as a landmark that described the cemetery and its historic importance. However, due to the efforts of the African-American Alliance, the city of Newnan, Newnan Utilities and others, the house will now serve as Coweta County's museum of African-American history. Other areas of the house will allow guests to research their history and genealogy. The African-American Alliance, an affiliate of the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society, works to collect, preserve and promote stories and artifacts about the history of Coweta's African-American community.
