Pre-K registration continues tomorrow By JOHN THOMPSON
Parents may still register their children for voluntary pre-Kindergarten classes at their districted elementary schools through tomorrow, April 26. Children districted in Jefferson Parkway, Atkinson and Elm Street Elementary School districts register at the Maggie Brown Pre-Kindergarten School, except on the morning of April 26, when they will register and draw for enrollment at Jefferson Parkway Elementary School. Voluntary Pre-K students from those three schools attend Pre-K at Maggie Brown. Also, all Coweta County Schools will register for 2003-2004 Kindergarten classes from 8 a.m. to noon tomorrow. To register for either program, parents or guardians must present a birth certificate and must establish proof of residency through a power bill which shows the parent's name and address. Other documents such as a water bill, phone bill or mortgage cannot be accepted as proof of residency. Registration for Pre-Kindergarten classes will continue through the school day today. Parents who cannot register during the day on those dates can also register from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. tomorrow. Because of high demand and a limited number of class slots available, a lottery will again be used to select students who will participate in Coweta County School System's Pre-Kindergarten classes for the school year 2003-2004. Registrants do not have to be present at the school when students' names are drawn tomorrow. Parents are urged to call their district school to check on the most convenient registration times during the period. Coweta County elementary schools are served by at least one pre-Kindergarten class with the exception of Arbor Springs, Canongate, Eastside, Moreland, Newnan Crossing, Moreland and Ruth Hill, which each have two classes. Twenty names will be drawn for each class. Twins or triplets will be registered and drawn together unless it is for the twentieth slot. In this case, if no other slot becomes available before school begins, the parent or guardian must make a decision concerning the slot. The remaining names will be drawn and placed on a waiting list in the order in which they are drawn. The principal or designees in each school will draw the names in an open meeting area and the assistant principal or designated person will record the names and number the registration forms in the order in which they are drawn. It is not necessary for parents to be present when names are drawn. The pre-kindergarten teacher will notify them by mail and/or on the phone. Children who register after the drawing tomorrow will be added to the waiting list in the order in which they register. Students in the State Lottery Pre-Kindergarten must be four years of age on or before Sept. 1. To attend the pre-Kindergarten program, a child must have a Social Security card (or waiver); a birth certificate; hearing, vision, and dental certificate; and an immunization certificate. Hearing, vision and dental and the immunization certificate can be obtained at the Coweta County Health Department or from your pediatrician. A birth certificate and proof of residency through an electrical bill is required before the child can enter the lottery. The school day for voluntary Pre-Kindergarten is from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the calendar days are the same as the regular school calendar. Pre-kindergarten students have access to the regular bus lines, breakfast, lunch, and the After School Program. If further information is needed, call the Office of Curriculum and Instruction at 770-254-2810.
