Peeples Elem. hosts artist-in-residence

Peeples Elementary School in Fayetteville was awarded a matching grant from the Georgia Council for the Arts and Young Audiences of Atlanta to provide an artist-in-residence for a period of one week.

During Fine Arts Week, Karin Mervis, a muralist, joined the staff at Peeples in March to guide students in designing and painting a mural especially for Peeples. Over 800 people including students in grades K-5 as well as teachers and parents participated in painting this colorful 4-foot-by-5-foot mural that now is on permanent display at the school. The canvas was created using mixed media and depicts a stylized rendering of the school and its students. Under the direction of Ms. Mervis, each participant painted a part of the mural. Other events during Fine Arts Week included parent visits to music and art classes where the students revealed their budding musical and artisic talents. Fine Arts week is planned by music teacher Tonya Hearn and art teacher Lucy Wicker.
