Paving work on Hwy. 74 in PTC taking place at night

Nighttime lane closures on Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City are expected to continue Thursday night for a resurfacing project.

The work is expected to last from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The location has been changed to work on the northbound lane between mileposts 7 and 5, which is further away from the intersection of Hwy. 54, officials said.

Motorists who normally travel that roadway should seek an alternate route as delays are expected, officials said.

The resurfacing project will cover the entire length of Hwy. 74 from Ga. Highway 85 on the south end northward to the Fulton County line. The 16.35 mile project will cost approximately $2.7 million.

DOT officials say the work is necessary for preventative maintenance. Crews will also be adding four-foot shoulders to the highway, officials said.

The decision to do the work overnight was to "minimize the inconvenience to motorists and local businesses," said DOT District Engineer Thomas Howell.

"Most importantly, work zones are much safer for motorists and workers when there are fewer vehicles traveling through the work zone," Howell said. "By working at night, we greatly reduce the number of vehicles traveling through our active work zone."
