If you are an early riser on the weekends you may have seen the local high school quiz show program "High-Q." If you have seen the show lately, chances are you have seen the team from Fayette County High School.

Fayette County's academic team has competed on "High-Q" for the past four years. This year's squad emerged as the "High-Q" champions.

The team which consists of captain Blake Alverson and fellow senior Jacob Lewin, along with juniors Danny Cairns and Kirk Palan defeated Newnan, Sequoyah, Lovett, Clarke Central (in the semifinals) and Parkview (in the finals) to win the championship. The team is coached by Peter Lewin.

Along with the title of "High-Q" champions, all four members won a Presidential Scholarship to LaGrange College worth $82,000 each for all four years of schooling at the private college.

The team begins practicing in August, meeting two to three mornings a week. They go over question format and competitive strategies and each member is asked to focus on a particular area of study. The team then competes in a number of Academic Competition League matches which are set up by the Regional Educational Services Agency (RESA) in Griffin. The team has been crowned RESA champs four times in the past 12 years and county champs from 1991-1999.

The team also travels outside of the state. This year's team competed in both Tennessee and South Carolina, while past teams have gone as far north as Connecticut and as far west as California.

The team was excited to be on the "High-Q" set and had a good time meeting host Chuck Dowdle. It was also an exciting time for the parents of the team as they went to the set and watched Fayette County win their first ever "High-Q" championship.

"High-Q" just wrapped their 17th year of production. It features three rounds: the Face Off round, the Quick Quiz round and the Final Exam. The questions are in a range of subjects including history, math, literature, science and arts as well as current events.

"High-Q" is on WSB Sunday mornings at 7 a.m.
