Art contest coming up
Last week, U.S. Rep. David Scott announced his participation in the 22nd annual High School Congressional Art Competition. High school students throughout the 13th Congressional District have been invited to submit their works of art for the competition. Participating high schools this year include Newton, Creekside, Morrow, South Atlanta, Jonesboro, North Clayton, Lovejoy, Jackson, Cedar Grove and Meadow Creek. "I am excited to launch the Congressional Arts competition in my district to highlight the works of high school artists and to recognize the teachers who foster this creativity in our students," said Scott. The Congressional Arts Competition was created in 1982 as a way to showcase the artistic talents of young people throughout the country. The first-place winner of the competition will be invited to attend an awards ceremony June 24 in Washington, D.C. Winning works of art from throughout the nation will be displayed for one year in the Cannon Tunnel that leads to the U.S. Capitol from Members' offices. The theme of this year's competition is "At the Center of Democracy." Students of the 13th District may obtain entry packets from their high school art teachers. All entries must be delivered to the 13th Congressional District Office, located at 173 North Main Street in Jonesboro, no later than April 21. "On Saturday, April 26, I will host a reception to recognize the participants and announce the top three winners of the Congressional Art Competition at the Old Clayton County Court House located at 121 South McDonough Street in Jonesboro, Georgia. I invite residents of the District to come out to support our students and view an exhibit of all of the entries," said Scott.
