Man killed after vehicle strikes tree off Hwy. 279

A Riverdale man was killed early Thursday morning when his vehicle veered off Ga. Highway 279 and struck a tree, police said.

Michael Joseph Howard, 26, was traveling south on the highway when his vehicle left the roadway near Austin Drive, according to Lt. Col. Wayne Hannah of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. Howard's truck, a 1997 Chevrolet C-15, traveled over 500 feet before striking the tree with the driver's side door of the truck, Hannah said.

Howard was wearing his seat belt at the time of the collision, but he apparently died at the scene due to blunt trauma to his head from the side impact, Hannah said.

As typical with all serious injury crashes, the Sheriff's Department took a blood sample from Howard to determine if he was intoxicated with alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash. It is unknown if that was the case currently, Hannah said.

The crash was the first auto traffic fatality in Fayette County this year.
