Fayetteville to get new McDonald's on south side; O'Charley's also in works

Fayetteville residents can get ready for a second helping of McDonald's as the fast food chain plans to build a second store on Ga. Highway 85 south between the new Walgreen's drug store and the GTO's Drive In restaurant.

The home of the Big Mac will look almost exactly the same as the one rebuilt at the store's location in the Hudson Plaza shopping center on Hwy. 85 north, a company representative told the city's Planning and Zoning Commission Tuesday night.

"I want to compliment you on your present facility. It's very nice," said commissioner Derryll Anderson.

The commission is expected to vote on the McDonald's plan at its next meeting April 22 at 7 p.m.

Another restaurant discussed its building plans with the commission. O'Charley's officials want to locate on Ga. Highway 85 north near the Fayette Pavilion.

The matter is far from a done deal, however, as commissioners expressed concern over exterior lighting that looked familiar to "neon" lighting. Although the lighting was called by another name, the sample displayed by a company representative looked just like neon lighting, said commissioner Allan Feldman.

The commission also debated plans for a retail building just south of the Merlin Muffler shop on Ga. Highway 85 north. The building would house eight shops, with plans for the anchor store to be a Quizno's Subs restaurant.

Several commissioners expressed concern about the variances that were requested to allow the building to pull closer to the street. But city director of planning and zoning Jahnee Prince said she asked the applicant to seek those variances to the building would have more of a main street look. The variances would also allow for a patio to be built for the Quizno's restaurant so customers could eat outside.

The current orientation of the building on the plans also drew some criticism from commissioners who said they don't want to see quite as much of the parking lot. But a company representative said doing so would block the view of the existing car wash building which is further down the access road off Hwy. 85.
