Churches schedule Holy Week services

Christian churches all over the Southside are preparing for one of the holiest times of the church year, Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter, which will be celebrated this year from Palm Sunday, April 13, through Easter Sunday, April 20. Congregations are planning everything from Easter egg hunts to foot washings, from re-creations of the Last Supper to somber Tenebrae services, from pageants portraying the life of Christ to those depicting the death of Christ, all leading to the joyous celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday.

Churches which have announced their various activities include the following:

Bethany United Methodist, 770-964-6999:

· Maundy Thursday, April 17, 7 p.m. in the church sanctuary, "Lord, Is It I?" dramatic presentation depicting Leonardo Da Vinci's painting of the Last Supper, plus musical performance and a service of Holy Communion. Nursery provided.

Catholic Church of St. Gabriel, 770-461-0492:

· Sunday, April 13, blessing of the palms with Nativity Episcopal, 10:30 a.m.; Mass following.

· Thursday, April 17, Mass of the Lord's supper, 7 p.m., includes foot washing.

· Friday, April 18, meditation on the seven last words of Christ, noon until mid-afternoon; Stations of the Cross with Nativity Episcopal , 3 p.m.; Passion of the Lord, veneration of the cross, 7 p.m.

· Saturday, April 19, Vigil Mass, 8 p.m.

· Sunday, April 20, Easter Masses at 8 and 10:30 a.m.

Christ Our Hope Lutheran, 770-997-7117:

· Sunday, April 13, Procession of the Palms, 8:30 and 11 a.m.

· Thursday, April 17, Maundy Thursday Communion services, noon and 7:30 p.m. Nursery provided for 7:30 service.

· Friday, April 18, Good Friday Service of Tenebrae, 7:30 p.m. Nursery provided.

· Sunday, April 20, Easter breakfast served by youth group, 9:30 a.m.; Festival Service of Communion, 8:30 and 11 a.m.

· Friday, April 18, joint Good Friday service at Carriage Lane.

· Friday, April 18, joint Good Friday service St. Gabriel's Catholic Church (next door), "Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross," noon-3 p.m.; The Way of the Cross in the church's Memorial Garden, weather permitting, 3:15 p.m.; Good Friday Rite, 7 p.m.

· Saturday, April 19, Holy Saturday Vigil Prayer, noon.

· Sunday, April 20, The Great Vigil of Easter, 6 a.m. (The New Fire, Service of the Light, Service of the Word, Holy Baptism, the First Eucharist of Easter); Easter breakfast, 8 a.m.; no Sunday school; Festal Service of Holy Eucharist, 10:30 a.m.; children's program following 10:30 service; Easter egg hunt immediately following children's program.
