A team of assessors who will evaluate the Peachtree City Police Department for its national reaccreditation will take comments from the public at a special meeting Monday, April 28, at 7 p.m. at City Hall.

The assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. will also accept comments via telephone Tuesday, April 29, from 1-5 p.m.; callers must call 770-631-2560 during that time frame to record their comments.

Whether the comments are given at the meeting or via phone, each citizen is limited to 10 minutes, and the comments must address the agency's ability to meet CALEA standards. A copy of the criteria is available at the department headquarters on 350 S. Highway 74 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Written comments may be mailed to CALEA at 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, Va. 22030-2201

The CALEA assessment team will perform an on-site inspection of the department, focusing on such areas as policies and procedures, management, operations and support services. The team will review written materials, interview individual officers and tour places where compliance with the standards can be observed.

The assessment will verify the department's continued compliance with accreditation standards, according to Police Chief James V. Murray.

The department must comply with 333 mandatory standards and another 80 percent of 110 non-mandatory standards to qualify for reaccreditation.

Once the team's assessment is through, it will report back to the full CALEA commission, which will determine if the department is granted reaccreditation status.

"Being accredited is an honor for both our department and the citizens we serve," Murray said. "The accreditation process has guided our efforts to provide the citizens of Peachtree City with the highest quality of service while maintaining a community policing perspective. As a result, and in cooperation with citizen volunteers, Peachtree City remains one of the safest communities in the United States and a community our citizens are proud to call home."

The department was originally accredited in 1992, and it was granted reaccreditation in 1997 and 2000.

In addition to its national accreditation, the department is also accredited at the state level.

For more information, contact reaccreditation manager Sgt. Rosanna Dove at 770-487-8866 or via e-mail at rdove@peachtree-city.org.
