Lawrence Helms


Lawrence Helms, 77, Peachtree City, died March 18, 2002. He was born Dec. 27, 1925 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Services are at the Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church, April 2, with the Rev. John Weber and the Rev. Miriam Beecher officiating. Survivors include daughters, Janet and Bob Stratton, Peachtree City, and Shirley and Frank Elliott, Chardon, Ohio; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Leonard Helms and Ralph Helms, both of Cleveland, Ohio; and a sister, Arlene Janmey, Cleveland, Ohio. George Edward Fryar


George Edward “Pop” Fryar, 72, Fayetteville, died March 20 ,2003. He was born Dec. 27, 1929 in Mena, Ark. Memorial services were at Flat Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Priester officiating. Survivors include a son, George E. and Vaster Fryar III, O’Brian, Fla.; daughters, Janice Ray Fryar, and Kathie D. and John Vinson, all of Fayetteville, and Debbie and Cecil Gilreath, McDonough, Ga.; grandchildren Amanda Flintoff, Sarah Lam, Julie Vinson, Luke Gilreath, Emily Bell, Valerie Vinson, Laura Leigh Vinson, and Blaine Vinson; and a sister, Cathleen Byers, Nehall, Calif. Bennie F. McLaren


Bennie F. “Ben” McLaren, 78, Fayetteville, died March 21, 2003. He was born July 31, 1924 in Neodesha, Kan. At the age of 17, he volunteered for active duty in the United States Navy and served with distinction as a radioman. He was graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1952. He was retired from Marathon Oil Company after 35 years of service, and was an active member of North Fayette United Methodist Church. Services were at the North Fayette United Methodist Church with the Rev. Zip Long and the Rev. Bob Kerr officiating. Interment was at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. Survivors include his wife, whom he married Feb. 20, 1954, Dorothy D. McLaren, Fayetteville; a son, Scott Alan and Mary McLaren, Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Sharon Ann and Kevan Brady, Atlanta; grandchildren, Cecilia Maria McLaren, Lucy Grey McLaren, and William Scott McLaren; a brother, Dan McLaren, Nashville, Tenn.; and a sister, Betty Jo Smith, Tulsa, Okla. Memorial donations may be made to the North Fayette United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.

Mary Ann Abna


Mary Ann Abna, 70, Fayetteville, died March 22, 2003. She was born Jan. 23, 1933 in Chattanooga, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Abna, and a daughter, Kelly Abna Wolfe. Graveside services were at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City, with the Rev. David Paul and the Rev. Ed Williams officiating. Survivors include a son, Joel Abna, Sharpsburg; daughters, Melissa Abna, Fayetteville, and Beth and the Rev. David Paul, Macon; grandchildren, Darryl Paul and Hannah Paul, Macon; and a sister, June Allen, Fayetteville. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.

Jane Clarice McIntyre


Jane Clarice McIntyre, 68, Peachtree City, died March 27, 2003. She was born Jan. 11, 1935 in Scott County, Tenn. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Bill Priester officiating. Survivors include a sister, Mary Maud and Richard Hiestand, Peachtree City; nephews, John and Lisa Hiestand, Cumming, Ga., and Jeremy Hiestand, Duluth, Ga.; a great-nephew, James Hiestand, Cumming; and aunts, Kathleen Davidson, Robbins, Tenn., and Gladys, McIntyre, Nashville, Tenn. Hilda Carlton Bentley


Hilda Carlton Bentley, 81, Fayetteville, died March 23, 2003. She was born Nov. 19, 1921 in Coosa County, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Benjamin Bentley. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Bill Priester officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, College Park. Survivors include a son, Henry Benjamin Bentley, Fayetteville; daughters, Kay Leta Koon and Melody Gay Deleshaw, both of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Roderick Bentley, Jennifer Rivas, Kara Koon, Katie Koon, Clinton Deleshaw, and Clay Deleshaw; and great-grandchildren, Aidan Rivas and Eason Rivas. Mattie Lee Beard


Mattie Lee Beard, 80, Fayetteville, died March 25, 2003. She was born Jan. 1, 1923 in Georganna, Ala. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Beard. She was a masters seamstress for the Mobile Society. Services were at the Pine Crest Cemetery, Mobile, Ala., with the Rev. David Sergeant officiating. Survivors include granddaughters, Patricia L. and Charles R. Markin, North Port, Ala., and Cheryl B. and Tom Livingston, Fayetteville; grandsons, Capt. Ian C. Livingston, Rob and Sharon Markin, Los Angeles, Calif., and Charles “Chuck” and Phoebe Markin, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; granddaughters, Julie Markin, and Molly Markin; great-grandson, Cade Markin; and a brother-in-law, Woodrow L. and Vera Beard. Jean C. Lynch


Jean C. Lynch, 72, Peachtree City, died March 19, 2003. She was born Aug. 24, 1930 in Union City, N. J. Services were at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Peachtree City, with the Rev. Father John Walsh officiating. Survivors include her children, Barbara Jean Ortiz, Senoia, John and Amy Lynch, Fayetteville, and William and Maria Lynch, Atlanta; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Irene and Larry Pullen, Lakewood, N. Dorothy Louise Dunwoody Allen


Dorothy Louise Dunwoody Allen, 86, Fayetteville, died March 27, 2003. She was born Dec. 14, 1916 in LaFayette, Walker County, Ga. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Toombs Allen Jr. He was the grandson of S. A. Burks, who built the Burks Hotel in Fayetteville in the early 1900s. She was an avid gardener and lover of music despite a life-long hearing disability. Her sense of humor was unstoppable and her life was lived out serving others. Services were at the McDonough Road Baptist Church, Fayetteville with interment at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Survivors include children, Barbara and Roy Hand, Robert T. and Marie Allen III, James F. and Audrey Allen, and Jane Allen and Douglas Garner; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Frances Clements, LaFayette, Ga., and Mildred Boleyn, Athens, Ga.
