School system announces Teacher of the Year candidates Teachers of the Year for each of Coweta County's 27 public schools have been elected by their fellow faculty members. They will participate in the May 12 Coweta County Teacher of the Year Program, which the Board of Education presents annually with the Newnan Pilot Club. The 2003 Teachers of the Year from each school are: Andrea Fortunato, Arbor Springs; Tica Spake, Arnall Middle; Sarah Frederick, Arnco-Sargent; Phyllis Pannell, Atkinson; Pam Marett, Canongate; Barbara Rickles, Central Educational Center; Cynthia Bennett, East Coweta High; Dr. Carol Turner, East Coweta Middle; Chrystie Barrett, Eastside. Other TOTYs are Sue Brown , Elm Street; Angie Sutton, Jefferson Parkway; Brenda Foyle, Evans Middle; Karen Peterson, Madras Middle; Marci Fiske, Maggie Brown; Melanie Perry, Moreland; Kim Wilson, Newnan Crossing; Susan Quesinberry, Newnan High; Charles Daley, Northgate High. Other TOTYs are Robin Kendrick, Northside; Geraldine Moore, Poplar Road; Terri Buckland, Ruth Hill; Tammye Hicks, Smokey Road Middle; Rick Gemmell, Thomas Crossroads; Sandi Thompson,Western; Julie Raschen, White Oak; Nancy Williams, Willis Road; Kevin Gilmore , Winston Dowdell Academy. The Times-Herald of Newnan and Regions Bank will once again be Teacher of the Year sponsors. The 2003 Teacher of the Year will be named at the May 12 event. This year's Coweta County Teacher of the Year is Dale Sizemore, who is an art teacher at Newnan High School. Coweta's 2001 TOTY, Lorraine Johnson, is currently Georgia's Teacher of the Year and one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year. She is one of twelve Georgia semi-finalists from Coweta since 1986, including two,Nancy Royal and Jamie Lipscomb, who also went on to be selected as Georgia Teacher of the Year. The Coweta County School System is the only school system in Georgia with three state teachers of the year. Teachers of the Year are selected for the quality of their teaching, professional development, teaching philosophy and methods, community involvement, and contributions to education. From the local nominees will come three finalists, one of whom will be chosen Coweta Teacher of the Year and nominee for Georgia Teacher of the Year.
