Schlumper working highway agenda By JOHN
THOMPSON Since Commissioner Leigh Schlumper took over the gavel as Coweta County Commission chairman in January, she has been a busy woman. One of the main issues Schlumper has been fighting for is visual and safety improvements to the busy Ga. Highway 34 corridor. During last week's commission meeting, Schlumper got the board to approve paying for maintenance and beautification of the road. "It's the first thing I've got in two years up here," she said after the meeting. But that was only the first step in making one of Coweta's busiest roads more attractive and safer for the 67,000 cars on the road each day. During next Tuesday's commission meeting, Schlumper will asked the board to improve the signage on the road. She would like to see all the yard signs that pop up on the weekend to be uniform, such as the ones that are used in Fayette County. "I'd be more than glad to bring one and let y'all see what it looks like," she said. But visual improvements are not the sole aim of Schlumper. During last week's meeting, she got the board to approve a request to DOT to reconsider the addition of a turn signals at the intersection of Sullivan Road/Baker Road and Hwy. 34. Schlumper also got the board to participate with the DOT to speed up installation of a traffic signal at Hwy. 34 and Andrew Bailey Road. With traffic increasing daily between Newnan and Peachtree City, Schlumper said she's trying to be proactive in keeping the road safe for all the travellers.
