PTC teens: More activities, better relationship with police needed

A group of teens and adults have wrapped up a series of meetings to create ideas of how to improve the quality of life for teens in Peachtree City.

The ideas ranged from having activities for teens such as a "drive-in movie" for golf carts and concerts at the city's amphitheater to creating a better working relationship with the city's police officers.

An industrious group of teens also plans to form a "teen youth council" to work with the regular city council on various issues affecting teenagers. Mayor Steve Brown and Councilman Dan Tennant attended last week's meeting on behalf of the city council and participated in several of the group discussions.

Youth leaders spoke at the meeting and said it was important for teens to have positive outlets to help them "stay out of trouble".

Capt. Terry Ernst of the Peachtree City Police Department said at the last meeting that there is an impression that police officers "pick on the youth." The department has a youth police academy program that would be a good way to foster better relationships with the city's teenagers, Ernst said.
