Summer camp season is a little over two months away. To help you prepare for the summer and find activities for your children, the Peachtree City Recreation Department will have a Super Summer Sign-Up Day Saturday, March 29, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., offering early registration for day camps and swim lessons. There will also be drawings for free prizes every half hour during the event, which will take place at the Recreation Administration Building at 191 McIntosh Trail.

One of the camps that will be signing up campers will be Camp McIntosh, open to campers ages five (must reach their sixth birthday by Sept. 1, 2003), to 10 years old. The camp runs for two week sessions and offers both outdoor and indoor games, swimming, entertainment, fieldtrips and theme related activities. Though campers are expected to bring their own lunch, the $150 fee includes field trips, supplies, snacks, drinks and a camp t-shirt.

Transportation during camp will be provided by Fayette County Board of Education buses, which will be operated by a certified bus driver. All counselors are 18 years old and older and the camp maintains a 1:10 counselor to camper ratio.

Session one, "Survival on the African Plains" and "Cool Things in Summer" will run June 2-13, while session two "Spin a Web with Spiderman and Hokus-Pokus and Magical Tales" will run June 16-27. A special feature of this session will be a climbing wall on which all campers can hone their Spiderman skills. Session three, "American Spirit and Sports Mania" will run June 30-July 11 but will not meet July 4. This session will have a fee of $135 because of the holiday. Session four, "Wacky Inventions and Let The Competition Begin," will run July 14-25.

There will also be a number of specialty camps offered. Susan Steadman will be the instructor for a drama camp open to ages six to nine years old. Children will play theatre games, learn the basics of acting, create their own masks and present a short play "The Enchanted Forest." Campers should bring a snack and beverage each day. There will be two sessions offered; June 9-13 and June 16-20. The camp runs from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day.

Kids "Kwilting" give campers the opportunity to make a fully completed quilt of their own. All materials will be supplied, except for the backing. The camp is open to ages nine-19 and will take place Tuesdays-Saturdays from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sessions will take place June 17-21, June 24-28, July 15-19 and July 22-26. The fee for the camp, instructed by Toni Swanker, is $90.

There will be three sessions of art camp offered. Campers will work with a variety of mediums including watercolors, acrylics, pencils, beads and assorted paper crafts. Each camper should bring a lunch, a drink and an old t-shirt to class. The sessions are June 23-27, July 7-11 and July 28-Aug. 1. The camp, taught by Jane Opp, is geared towards rising second graders to 12 year olds and will meet from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. The fee is $125.

Tumbling camp, geared towards children ages seven to 12, will emphasize basic to advanced tumbling, cheerleading jumps, chants and conditioning. The instructor will be Christy Johns and will run from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Thursdays. There are six sessions to choose from June 2, June 9, June 16, June 23, July 21 or July 28 and the fee is $75.

There will also be a variety of sports camps offered. Kedron Kids Basketball camp, open to ages six to 10 years old, will be instructed by Coach David Pina. The session is June 2-5 and will run at two times; 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The fee is $95 and campers will get a designated time to swim each day as well as a trophy and a t-shirt. Junior High Hoop Camp is a co-ed camp for junior high students also instructed by Pina. The fee is $100 and there will be optional swim time each day.

There will be several tennis camps offered for a variety of different age and talent groups. Munchkin camps for ages four to seven, will take place Tuesday through Thursday from 8:15-9 a.m. for a fee of $25. There are seven sessions to choose from. Junior Beginner and Advanced tennis camps will run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9-10:30 a.m. for a fee of $25.

Judo/All Sports is an action packed week of sports. Self defense is the main focus of the camp but each day students will swim, play basketball or play in the game room. There will also be team competition featuring relay races, soccer games and more. The camp is open to ages five to 17 for a fee of $125. Participants may choose one of two sessions: May 27-30 or June 16-20. Campers must bring a bathing suit, a towel, lunch and drink.

As always there will also be swim lessons offered for ages six months old to adults. A session consists of eight 30-minute classes for a fee of $45 for Fayette County residents and $55 for non-county residents.
