Womanless beauty pageant in Newnan April 25

In conjunction with the City of Newnan's 175th anniversary, the newly formed Newnan Coweta Youth Council will sponsor a Womanless Beauty Pageant Friday, April 25, at the Newnan High School Auditorium.

The show is a new spin on an old tradition, the Womanless Wedding. The history of a Womanless Weddings can be traced back over a hundred years, but became popular in Southern towns during the 1940s. In such a mock wedding, men would dress up in the traditional wedding clothing and act out the scenes of famous weddings or one made up to poke fun and local residents. These fundraisers were successful in their day in raising funds for local charities.

In the early 90s a new spin was put on these weddings. The trend moved toward showcasing these willing men in a beauty pageant, since after all the purpose of coming to the show was to see prominent men in the community dressed in women's clothing.

Newnan will have the opportunity to bring back a taste of history and give our men a chance to raise money for a local organization. The proceeds from the tickets will go to benefit the Newnan Coweta Youth Leadership program which was established this year. The students in the program who are from each of the area high schools will work on the show as a community project. With enough funds raised, a scholarship might be available to one or more of the 24 students in the program.

Tickets are going on sale the week of March 31 and will available in local downtown Newnan stores. There will be no ticket sales at the Auditorium doors. Tickets will be $15.

Participants in the show will be looking for corporate sponsors. Businesses in the area can sponsor a pageant contestant for either $75 or $150. The $150 sponsorship will allow your contestant to not only be in the pageant but showcase "her" talent. If you are interested in sponsoring a contestant contact Leigh Schlumper 770-251-3383 or at leigh@numail.org.

There are currently 16 local businessmen and elected officials signed up to participate. The names of the participants will be released the day tickets go on sale.

This is one show you won't want to miss. By the way, there will be no photography or video cameras allowed in the auditorium.
