Powers makes donation, challenges community

Fayette County Board of Education member Greg Powers has made the first donation to the new Whitewater High School Athletic Booster Club along with a challenge to local businesses and parents.

Powers presented a $1,000 check to Principal Greg Stillions and head football coach Amos McCreary March 3 to go into the coffers of the club. Powers says he is making the donation to spearhead business/community leaders and parents of the new high school to do the same.

"I want to issue a challenge to the community to make a donation, no matter how large or small, to help start the club and purchase needed equipment," he said.

Coach McCreary estimates that it will take approximately $200,000 the first year to get all sports programs started at the school. Whitewater High will open next year for ninth-graders at the LaFayette Educational Center and then move the following year to its permanent building, which is being constructed on Ga. Highway 85 South next to Sara Harp Minter Elementary.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the booster club can do so by calling Stillions at 770-460-3990, ext. 232.
