Pay your speeding fine online in PTC?

It may soon be as easy as going online to take care of a speeding ticket given in Peachtree City.

The company that provides the city with its court system software has developed a program that allows for online payment of most citations, according to city staff.

City Council will be asked to consider the online payment system during its regular monthly meeting Thursday.

The convenience would come fairly cheap too, at just $3 per ticket, as proposed by the city.

Courtware Systems, Inc., will charge a technology fee that averages to about $1.75 per citation. An additional fee of about 3 percent of each fine would cover the cost to the city for maintaining a "merchant account" for credit charges.

"If significantly more citations are paid online, it may be necessary to increase the fee at a later date," wrote City Clerk Jane Miller in a memo to the mayor and council.

Miller estimates that as many as 25 percent of all traffic tickets given in the city will be paid online. Additionally, the city is considering installing a kiosk in the lobby of City Hall so traffic citations can be paid by credit card after court appearance.

In other business, the council will consider the return of alcohol license fees when circumstances prevent the license holder from fully utilizing the license.

The meeting is 7 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at City Hall, 151 Willowbend Road.
