Students form club to help classmates and teachers

Fifth-graders in the after-school program at Cleveland Elementary are forming a new service club that will help the school's students and teachers alike.

It is called the "High 5 Club" and operates under a motto taken from a quote by Charles Dickens: "No one in this world is useless who lightens the burden of it for anyone else."

Students are putting their motto into practice right away by planning a fundraiser in which they hope to raise money to help pay tuition fees for classmates who otherwise would not be able to attend the after-school program. During the month of April, they will sell greeting cards that club members have created in order to raise the necessary funds.

In addition to helping fellow students, the organization has also created a "teacher needs" form so that staff can request help with specific projects from club members.

"The idea behind the creation of the club is to teach responsibility, leadership and citizenship and encourage community service," said site coordinator Lois Woodward, who is overseeing the formation and operation of the group.

With Woodward's assistance, the club is applying for a grant from Youth Services America to help pay for supplies and materials needed for their ongoing service projects.
