Perdue proclaims Weekend of Prayer

Citing the uncertain times that currently face this country, Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue has issued a proclamation designating Friday through Sunday, March 14-16, as a Weekend of Prayer in Georgia.

"I call on our state leadership, religious leaders, and all Georgians to join in this Weekend of Prayer," said Perdue in signing the proclamation. "In this time of uncertainty and concern for our nation, we need to lift up our President, his Cabinet and staff, our elected leaders, and the men and women who wear our Nation's uniform."

Perdue also sent a letter to President George W. Bush notifying him about the proclamation.

"As we stand on the threshold of conflict, I firmly believe that we, as Americans, should return to our roots and reaffirm our belief in the power of prayer," he wrote. "Since our nation's humble beginnings, our people have always turned to God for inspiration, strength, and guidance. If ever we need that divine wisdom and direction, it is now."

Perdue specifically cited certain groups for which he asked Georgians to pray "as their respective faiths direct." Those include "the brave men and women who wear our nation's uniform" and "the thousands upon thousands of people throughout the world who live under oppressive regimes."

"We give thanks for their willingness to sacrifice their lives in the defense of freedom and liberty not only for America but also for civilization," he said of the members of the nation's military. "We remember their families who are left behind to face uncertain and lonely days. We are grateful for our allies who have courageously joined in the struggle against terrorism."

Perdue closed his letter by saying that he and his wife Mary are continuing to pray for the president and the First Lady of the United States.
