County turns down GRTA By JOHN
THOMPSON The Georgia Regional Transportation Authority's plan to run commuter buses in suburban counties is starting to hit the skids. The Coweta County Commission Tuesday decided not to pay the transportation superagency's invoice for starting the service. In exchange for paying $850,000 to help run the bus system for three years, the county was to receive $10.4 million to improve dangerous intersections and arterial roads. The commissioners approved the deal last spring, but the political climate has changed. "We don't even know if this program's going to exist. There's no sense in paying this until we know what's going to happen at the state level," said Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter. Commission chairman Leigh Schlumper was the only commissioner last year who opposed the deal, and could hardly resist a "told you so' to Hunter. Plans for the bus system called for eight round trips a day from Coweta County to Hartsfield.
