Dogwood Forest, located on Hwy. 54 across from Fayette Community Hospital, is an assisted living residence. Entering the residence is similar to walking into a tastefully cozy home. Warmth and many personal touches, including a resident cat, create an inviting atmosphere.

In addition to assisted living services, Dogwood also offers respite care. Respite, or temporary care, allows caregivers the opportunity to take a vacation, provides help for those recovering from surgery, chemotherapy or other illnesses. Some opt to utilize the service while preparing for surgery or while undergoing dialysis. The reasons are unlimited.

Whether staying for a short time or opting to make Dogwood "home," a wealth of services and amenities are provided. Three nutritious meals and snacks, a 24-hour professional staff, housekeeping services, a wellness program, personal linen and laundry program, social and activities programs, all utilities except telephone and cable, primary assisted living services and scheduled transportation are included with the daily fee. A licensed nurse trained to understand and respond to senior needs is on-site around the clock.

Other amenities included in the daily fee are a private or companion suite, living areas, an ice cream parlor, emergency call system, dining room, private dining room, activities center, garden and walking paths, and a beautiful veranda.

Pets are welcome at Dogwood Forest. The resident cat, Tony, has managed to ingratiate himself with many of the residents.

"I love it," said Carol Rutzen, who moved to Dogwood in Dec. 2002. "I was never around cats before and have always been a dog person." She often opens her door to allow Tony to visit.

The spacious resident suites are "home like" and private. They are cable ready, have private baths and can be furnished if needed.

Supportive services are available for those with memory disorders. The Evergreen Program specifically provides help for those with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

According to their literature, "Our program and policies are based on a respect for each individual and the recognition of the every-changing needs of the person with dementia and their families. We believe that people have the innate right to function to their highest level of mental and physical capacity even while receiving assistance."

Dogwood Forest is now managed by Sunrise Assisted Living. Sunrise was founded in 1981 by Terry and Paul Klaassen.
